    Our home has exterior vinyl siding. Years ago, I mounted a piece of 3/4″ plywood about 18″ square on which to hang our garden hose. At that time, I could not locate any studs in the area, so I just used 2″ long deck screws to secure the board. That worked ok for a few years, but gradually the weight of the water-filled hose started pulling the siding away from the wall. Before that became a much bigger problem, I decided it was time to make a new mounting board that was screwed into at least two studs.The problem was that I could not locate the studs. I tried several methods. First I tried my 20+ year-old Zircon stud finder. It works pretty well on interior walls, but not on exterior walls that are too deep in the wall. Next I tried a powerful Neodymium magnet hanging from a thin string. That method has worked well for finding interior studs by locating the nail heads, but I had no luck on this exterior wall where the studs are set back about 3/4″ – 1″ from the surface of the siding.I even used an infrared camera on a cold night. Sometimes the studs will show up because they are warmer than the siding. This “almost” worked – I could vaguely see the locations of the studs, but when I drilled some test holes I did not strike wood. I even tried using the stud finder on the interior side of the wall opposite where I wanted to mount the hose. I found the studs, but had to make assumptions about the offsets from the edges of the wall inside vs. outside. Again, no luck after drilling several test holes.So I searched Amazon for a new stud finder. My hope was that more modern versions may be sensitive enough to locate studs 1″ deep in the wall.As soon as the new stud finder arrived, I did a series of tests on interior walls where I already knew where the studs were located. It passed those tests with ease. I took it out to where I wanted to mount the hose, and, at first, had no luck.After reading the user manual (for me, always a last resort (-: ) I found that I could change the depth sensitivity. Wow, to my surprise, the scanner quickly located the studs! Drilling a few test holes confirmed that it even accurately located the stud centers.So after hours of frustration, I now had a quick and reliable solution. I was able to get the job done and move on to the next one. This stud finder has earned a permanent place in my toolbox. When I find time, I plan to replace the mounting board with a bigger one that completely covers the 1x2s used to span the studs.
  • Most Stud finders are junk. This one is maybe a little better than most
    I’ve got a few stud finders around, and they are all generally terrible. I got this one because of all the positive reviews, and I can’t tell if it’s better because I just bought it and really want it to work, or if it is maybe a little better than the others I have around. On one wall, a junk stud finder found 3 studs which allowed me to map out the wall, this one found nothing. Can’t really explain that as this one generally worked better on other walls (or so it seemed).Here is the rundown on stud finders…….they all generally work OK in a home of newer construction, with very predictable and controlled thicknesses of drywall/paint, and newer studs that are in good contact with that drywall (no gapping..anywhere), ect. But, if you get into a home that is ~50+ years old, has had a few coats of paint, maybe a few previous owners did some DIY work that left some walls uneven or of varying thicknesses, ect, ect, ect…there is not a stud finder on the planet that will save you. You might get lucky and be able to isolate a stud location, then measure 16″ increments to locate the rest of the studs in the wall, but there is simply no studfinder (I have found) that works well through a few coats of paint and 30 years of wall patching and weekend-warrior work. I have just not found one that really, really really works.One feature on this device that does work well is the electrical wire locater. I was surprised at how accurate that was.

I calibrated it, then placed it on the wall slid it directly over a known stud, it detected nothing. I now have random pencil marks all over my wall, they wipe off easy enough, but I had to go buy a different one.

    This is by far the best stud finder I’ve ever used!! So far it’s showing exactly where the studs are, including where the edges are. I’ve been cutting into the gypsum to get at the studs, and it’s been exactly where the stud finder said it’d be. Great product!!!

    Finally I have a tape measure that fills all my wants. I needed a new tape measure because the 35′ S*anley Fat Max lock was almost impossible to lock from the beginning (super stiff to lock) and once I shot the locking tab with a bit of silicon spray to free it up, it won’t stay locked. Also it was way too big to hold comfortably and I have XL hands.Since I’m measuring from wall to wall using the tape body as part of the measurement for crown molding I’m putting up it’s imperative that the measurements be dead on. As soon as I received the Dewalt I measured a wall to wall I have the exact measurements of and it was perfect! I was worried since it has protective rubber outside the plastic case but they accounted for it. Like others have commented, the opening on the bottom that allows your finger to hold the tape and allows you to adjust the retract speed was a brilliant idea and it works perfectly. I had my doubts about the 13’* (note the asterisk) reach (never could find the asterisk info). I’m able to free air extend the tape a bit over 9′ without it snapping. My experience with all tapes is anything much over 9′ free air extension will start drooping the tape too much for an accurate measurement anyhow.Finally, to safely remove the tape from the packaging, open the cardboard split starting at the top going down and once that’s open the the formed plastic on the clip is freed up. There is a triangular tab in the middle of the belt clip in the plastic. Flip up the plastic tab in front of the triangle piece, slightly open the clip with your finger then the tape can be lifted up and out of the plastic holder. I took pictures for reference.I’m very happy with tape measure and it should last me a long, long time.

    This is a fantastic tape measurer. I previously had a very expensive one from a different popular brand and the locking mechanism broke after a few uses. I don’t see that being an issue with this one! The locking mechanism works great (and I’ve already used it a few times), and the whole thing feels very high quality and sturdy. The price was great, too! Highly recommend.

    I volunteer as a builder in Musanze Rwanda at an NGO that has American, European and African builders.The Americans that help build are more accustomed to Feet Inches while the African and Europeans use Meters.The Bosch GLM100-23 is an excellent tool that is easy for Americans to use Ft In and then quickly change settings to Meters for Africans and Europeans to use. The building team constantly take turns using the Bosch Laser all day into the early night. Tip …. When we have to measure a long distance we place a white thin stake into the ground where we can see the red dot. We note the distance. Then repeat the process with more white thin stakes until we reach the end of the total distance. We know the thickness of the white stake and add it to the total. It works perfectly.

    See photos. Bought 4 brackets to mount to garage ceiling for storing 2x4s & smaller lumber. Mounting in open space between 2 garage doors. 3 brackets needed to be in perfect alignment from 1st mounted one. Not possible to use a level on side of garage door track to mark reference point on ceiling. Rails have rounded edges. Bought Bosch Blaze Laser Distance Measure devise, “laser tape.” At 1st mounted bracket measured distance from edge to wall on other side of garage, 12’ 9 ¾”. Then used laser tape in other direction to find rafter 24” distance between 3 other brackets to hit attic joists. Ceiling is textured sheet rock that makes using stud finders very inaccurate. Used Bosch laser tape again to mark already measured distance to wall. Bosch laser tape made project finally move very quickly and accurately. The Bosch laser tape is so impressive for its accuracy to fraction of inch, very clear white on black display, one switch operation & very handy size that fits into the palm of the hand. Love this product!

    Good: Accurate. Amazing that it can time a laser with this much accuracy, but it does. Dead on perfect vs. a yardstick. Discovered I’m 1/4″ taller than I thought I was. Easy to use despite only two buttons. Battery life appears to be good since I’m still on the first pair despite all my playing around (and some serious work.)Bad: Beam is a bit weak. If you’re going to measure distances anywhere near the advertised 100′ range, make sure you do it at dusk. Enclosed pamphlet has tons of info re not looking into a laser beam that won’t hurt you, but to learn how to actually USE the thing you have to go online and download a PDF…that contains one page of useful info. Blow the extra penny on paper instructions, Bosch.Bottom line: I bought this to measure the rooms in my house and the size of the lot it sits on. An awkward two-person job with a tape measure, effortless with this gadget. Just don’t expect to measure over 50′ or so outdoors with the sun out. Five stars.Bottom line:

    Having used mechanical tape measures my entire life, (minus 5 years) I finally decided to go digital. Accuracy on this unit is exceptional, measurement options offer a great variety, simple layout and it works. Plus its a Bosch, they are just made well and last. There are many other units out there with various bells and whistles, but I just needed a unit that measured accurately and I could use by myself. This is it. I hesitated due to the price but it is well worth it. I found my new tape measure replacement. If you simply need something accurate and reliable this is it.

    These things are amazing!Cons would be: Not good in bright sunlight, not waterproof, don’t look into the laser cause it’s hotter than is really safe to get the long distance, not good in high dust, rain or mud, and don’t drop it a lot….But if you measure stuff indoors in nice places all the time, this will totally eliminate steel tape measures!!!!!!So if you need to measure things indoors in nice situations a lot. this IS the total ticket!It would be nice if it came with a nice case or belt/pocket pouch…Given the limits I mention here, it is a rock solid product!

    I needed a meter for around the house, and this one more than meets my requirements. It is a little more expensive than you might want to spend if you don’t have experience with electronics but it has great features you won’t find in a cheaper meter. Things like the flip out stand on the back, the slots to hold the test probes, the backlight, and ability to store the reading, are things you will not find in bottom of the line meters. If all you want to do is check to see if your AA batteries are dead this is more than you need, but if you are going to open up something electrical or electronic this should be all the meter you will need.

    Bought this moisture meter to keep check on the newly installed pressure treated deck rails. I know they say to wait months before staining but I read an article that says you can stain when the lumber is dry enough, 15% moisture content or below. So being impatient like I am I bought this meter. I checked the lumber after installing and it measured about 25% on average. 3 weeks later and it is about 20% on average. Won’t be too much longer hopefully! This thing is easy to use, easy to read and comes with an extra set of probes.

    I recently noticed a small crack in my ceiling that has a large brown outline around it. The brown outline is clearly water damage, but while the crack is definitely new, I cannot tell if the water damage has always been there or not. I bought this device to help me to determine if I need to call in a professional.The product arrived today, as expected. It was in its retail packaging, which is a clamshell. You’ll need scissors to open it up. A 9v battery was also inside the clamshell. I’m not sure why the change, but I’m really happy that companies are now including batteries with their toys.So I took the meter out of the packaging and put in the battery. No screws to take out or anything. The battery cover just clips back on.The device couldn’t be much easier to use. There are only 3 buttons..1. Power. Hold this to turn the moisture meter on and off2. Mode. Press this to switch between wood and “construction material” mode.3. Lock/Sound. Press this toggle “lock” of the display in case you want the percent to stay on the screen. Hold this to toggle whether or not the device beeps (you probably don’t want it to beep).I’d be testing my drywall ceiling, so I put the moisture meter into “construction material” mode. I was hoping I wouldn’t need to jam it into my ceiling to see the results, so I first tested a part of the ceiling I knew did not have a leak. The meter read about 3%. I moved over to the brown spot and pressed the needles against the ceiling (I didn’t push in) and, depending on where I was along the brown spot, the reading ranged from about 2%-6%. According to the guide on the back of the device (which is great), this means my ceiling is not very moist. Obviously that was good news.Then I started to worry that the device would not function right if it wasn’t fully pushed into the ceiling. I really did not want to put holes in the ceiling, but I figured that in the best case, I’d need to paint over the brown spot anyway, so two little holes couldn’t hurt. So I jammed the needles into the ceiling in a few places and getting a consistent reading was not easy. In a few of the spots, the percentage changed from between 1%-2%, then from 7%-10% and back again. I wasn’t moving the meter — it just could not decide the moisture level. Now, I understand the science behind the device (at least I think I do), so I get that I could have been moving it a little or maybe I was there was some movement within the ceiling so the circuit was not continuously completed.. I’m really not sure. I tried a few different places in the ceiling, and in the end, I have slightly more confidence that there is not a leak on the ceiling, but I am not sure about it. Hopefully if there was a leak, the device would be more decisive in telling me about the moisture.Overall, I think I’m happy about the purchase, but only because I got a little extra confidence for $30, which is probably less than I would have paid an “expert” to come and check it out. If you’re a home inspector or contractor who will be charging people for your use of a moisture meter, I would look into the more expensive options, but for a homeowner who does not want to pay $100+ for a device you’ll probably use 2-3 times in your lifetime, this one will give you a little more information than you currently have.In summary, very easy to use, but I’m not completely confident in its ability to give reliable results.

    I spent the evening using this tool on several different types of lights including single string, chasing lights, and icicle lights. I was able to use one or more of the features on this tool to fix them all.The single strands were the easiest. I started with a completely dead set first. With a swipe of the voltage detector, and one single click, the strand came to life and the blown bulbs were visible.The icicle and chasing lights required both the click fix, as well as, good old fashioned light by light testing. The built in bulb extractor and tester made shoot work of what is usually a very tedious task. The bulb extractor did take a little practice, but the bulb tester is super simple. Since these are multiple circuit strands the voltage detector couldn’t be used becuase at least one of the wires running the length always has voltage present. However this was not a big deal.The idea behind the click and fix is pretty clever. Basically if a light blows a shunt at the bottom of the bulb is supposed to bypass the blown filament and keep the other lights glowing. However if the filament and the shunt are both broken the stand cannot conduct electricity and the strand goes dark. With the tool plugged into one of the sockets and the strand plugged into the wall you pull the trigger on the tool. It sends a short high voltage burst through the bulbs basically arc welding the broken shunt back into place. This will allow the strand of lights to light revealing the blown bulb or bulbs. The high voltage emitter is a similar to what is used to start a cheap propane grill, or a butane lighter. It’s pretty much the same clicking noise as well.One thing I did notice was that if the shunt is too badly damaged the high voltage is not enough to weld it back together. However you can still see were the break is because when you squeeze the trigger the offending bulb will have a little high voltage arc visible inside.I have to say my favorite feature was the bulb tester. You can make sure a bulb lights without the pain of putting it in and out of the compression sockets on the light strings. This was really helpful as I was using bulbs from a donor strand that had a broken cord. The last thing I wanted was to replace a bad bulb with another bad bulb.All in all I was able to repair over $100 worth of lights with a $15 tool in a couple of hours time. I highly recommend this product for the number of tools built into the single unit, it’s ease of use, and excellent results.

    A section of our pre-lit tree wasn’t working. I have no clue how this magic works but three clicks and the lights were working again!
  • Almost, almost perfect & still worth the cost even if it can’t fix every string of lights you have.
    This worked, in almost every case, to immediately fix a string of 100 incandescent mini-lights where one or more 50-light portions would not light up. Its handy bulb tester was great, and the bulb-puller also quite useful. The audible voltage indicator worked for *some* strings of lights to find a suspect bulb, but would not ID failing bulbs or bad sockets or wires in every case. (It seemed to have the hardest time with tightly wound 3-wire sets, constantly providing the rapid detection tones at every bulb even if that section would not work.)There are numerous helpful videos available to show how the LightKeeper Pro operates, and indeed it does work just as shown. The instructions are clear, and the tool is safe to operate if you follow those instructions.For the price, this is still a lovely little tool, and if you still have numerous and various strings of mini incandescent lights as we do, and you struggle annually to identify the bad bulbs, as I do, and you swear a lot when trying to figure out why some strings no longer light up, as I do, it is more than worth the cost. True, it might not fix every string. And yes, you *can* buy multiple sets of new lights for less than the cost of the Lightkeeper pro, and save time. But if you don’t want to throw things away, and you refuse to let a string of lights beat you (especially as a retired electrical engineer!), and you want that neat feeling of having fixed something, then this is indeed the tool for you.

    I saw the commercial, I watched the You-Tube Videos, I thought AWSOME! So I bought it looking forward to all the benefits it claims. However, I can sum this product up in one word: USELESS!The first thing you need to know is that it will NOT work with light sets that have a programming box for multiple blinking options. –why did I have to buy it to find that out? It’s only mentioned buried in the instructional tri-fold.The primary reason I bought the thing is to repair the programmable $18.00-$24.00 light sets, who cares about the standard 150 light sets that can be had for $3.99 in any dollar store? But guess what? It DOES NOT WORK on those either!Yes, I followed the instructions; I read, and reread, them; I watched several videos, I wasted about 7 hours and $18.00.They claim that the number one cause of failure is a bad shunt, and the click method is supposed to fix that most of the time. Well, apparently none of the 6 strings I used it on had this problem, or the click to fix dealie don’t work–take your pick, I still can’t figure it out. Then I used the sound troubleshooting method. First, it’s very inconsistent as on one pass, it stops beeping, on the next pass over the same spot it beeps–and yes, again, I was following the instructions by the numbers, So when I think this is probably the problem bulb, I pull it and test it, the bulb was fine. Using a magnifier and adequate light, I confirmed the socket was just fine. So it told me nothing. Finally, I reverted to the old fashioned way– replacing each bulb one at a time. Meanwhile, I kept using he light keeper as I went, hoping to see how it acted when the actual problem was manually found. And guess what, it falsely indicated no problem at the bad bulb! (The tester was beeping away, indicating no-problem there!) So, finally I found the bad bulb and fixed it, but no thanks to the Light Keeper Pro. The only reason I kept working on that cheap set for almost an hour was a dogged determination to figure out what I was doing wrong. I mean it worked in all the company and user videos, so it musta’ been me right?Pig-headed, never say-die, guy that I am, and again, just in case I’m missing something, I went to work on another set with one of three sections out. Same process same result! Then on a another set that I couldn’t fix at all. Bottom line, either mine is defective, or the product only works for a very specific malfunction which, apparently, none of my 6 malfunctioning sets had.If I hadn’t seen their commercial, I would have just tossed the errant sets and bought new. What bothers me most isn’t the money spent–I’ll get that back–It’s the time completely wasted watching Videos, reading instructions, and trying to figure what I must have been doing wrong! I have no doubt that I had nothing to do with this gimmicks failure to produce the results promised. Save your money, and more importantly save your time and aggravation!

    I’ve had this unit for about 8 months and have used it several times. It’s easy to use and simple to figure out. It’s easy to switch to different materials. The power line detector has given several false readings but it has never not detected power just detected power when none is present. It has never failed to find a stud which is the main purpose. I wouldn’t use this for a business but for around the house or garage, it seems to work great. I got this people I didn’t want the kids using my good detector and compared to it, you can tell it’s a cheaper unit, but it has worked every time I needed it.

The multiple drywall depth settings were a lifesaver, especially in different parts of the house where wall thickness varied. I’ll admit that I’ve dropped it onto multiple floor types when forgetting it was perched on top of my ladder, including well over 7 feet onto rock hard concrete in the garage. Nothing has phased this stud finder and it continues to provide accurate x-ray-level readings to this day.But here’s the kicker – it’s an incredible all-in-one product for the price!     Worked right out of the box. I needed to find a stud to mount my monitors, and it was easy enough to use. Instructions are a little choppy, and I was nervous because I’d never used a stud finder before, but it’s fine once you start playing around with it a little bit.
  • Kinda works but better not
    It kinda works for detecting metal studs that are not beyond 1cm or so, so long as they are bare metal and not thinner structure. For wood it says it detects something but is so inaccurate that I just couldn’t trust it to start making holes without destroying the wall. So is a kinda nice gadget to have to one wish would work just fine but I guess is just one of those things where you have to buy some much better.

    Sucky stud finder. You have to calibrate it every wall you use it on, but how does that make sense if you don’t know where the studs are? The only thing this stud finder is good for is showing where there’s electrical wiring. But even then, I don’t know how accurate it is. Bought when we moved into our new place from out of state. Got so caught up in our adjustment period that we missed the return window. save your $. this isn’t worth it.

If the unit’s angle is too far and can’t become level, it does blink to indicate it can’t show level at that point. The auto leveling can be disabled and lock the lines into place. It is useful when items need to mounted at an angle.I’m using it with some tripods I have laying around and seems to be a standard thread.The only thing that I would like changed would be if the auto leveling had some dampening. Right now moving the tripod even a 1/8th of an inch causes the lines to bounce for a couple of seconds. It settles down at that point, but it would be nice to not have to wait so long to verify the lines are now in the desired location.Since I only need to move it a couple of times per mounting, it’s not a deal breaker.It seems like a solid device and works well. Would recommend.As a DIY’er, I don’t expect to use it very often, so I will not be able to comment on long term use.     Review is for the laser.Nice build quality. Easy to use and set up.They shouldn’t be allowed to sell this tripod. Advertisement misleading or I just didn’t read enough. Tripod is very cheap. Pictures showed a tall tripod being used. Not a table tripod.Didn’t have a table in the full remodel I was doing. Luckily being a photographer I had a real tripod.Laser worked great for new kitchen cabinet and counter top leveling.

    I used this laser level to hang two bathroom mirrors evenly above my vanity, and it made the job so much easier. The green laser line was bright, easy to see, and stayed accurate the whole time. For the price, the laser itself works really well it definitely exceeded my expectations.The only downside is the included tripod. It’s a bit flimsy and wobbly, especially if you need to make precise adjustments. I ended up using my own tripod for better stability, and that worked perfectly.Overall, it’s a great little laser level for home projects. Accurate, affordable, and simple to use. I’d recommend it, just don’t expect much from the tripod.

Very disappointing.

    Much better quality compared to some of the other cheap popular ones on Amazon, can definitely tell that the price that would’ve otherwise went towards the tripod was put towards this. There is a steel/alloy frame inside that actually gives the device some heft. Love the magnet stand it comes with. The last one I bought for the same price felt like a kid’s toy, this feels like it could at least survive a couple drops. Only gripe is that I wish it autocorrected more than 4°
