Scott CharlesExcellent. Smart. Easy. Foolproof. What a great product. Would never want to be without mine. If you take a few days to get through a bottle, this system is slick. It’s not complicated and doesn’t look stupid. This product has form and function. Simple to use. I really love it. Great gift idea too. Thank you!

LovetoCookSecond place wine preserver by Cooks IllustratedEasy to operate, with no learning curve. I’m not a wine expert, so I wouldn’t notice the difference on my palate if it wasn’t doing its job, but Cook’s Illustrated rated it very highly, so I assume that it is working :)UPDATE – SHORT VERSION – Convenient and works well, but Cook’s Illustrated did some tests and found some even better products!UPDATE – LONG VERSION:This is now the second place Wine Saver at www.cooksillustrated.com, as they have found a better one that preserves wine for longer. Here’s what they had to say: “For years we’ve preserved open bottles of wine either by using the Vacu Vin Wine Saver, an inexpensive ($9.29) pair of rubber stoppers with a pump that sucks the air out of the bottle, or by pouring leftover wine into a smaller bottle or Mason jar to stave off oxidation. But innovative new gadgets promise to keep wine drinkable longer. We tested six tools, including the Vacu Vin, on half-empty bottles of red and white wine, comparing and evaluating the wines’ flavors and drinkability at various time intervals…..Our old favorite worked reliably and kept wine drinkable for a week, but two new models bested it. As of press time, these two models had kept wine drinkable for one month. (We’ll continue to taste and report, so check our website for updates.) By inserting one model’s sharp, hollow needle through the cork—we never had to uncork the bottle—we could pour just the amount of wine that we wanted while activating a pressurized capsule that simultaneously fed argon (an inert gas) into the bottle to displace the tapped wine. Not even our trained wine expert could say which was fresher: a month-old bottle sealed by this product or a freshly opened bottle of the same vintage. Another, cheaper product is a worthy Best Buy: It forms a barricade against air when its balloon is lowered into the bottle and inflated just above the surface of the leftover wine. On the downside, it’s slightly finicky and can be used on only one bottle at a time.”Their new winner, for a short while, was the Coravin Wine Access System, but that was recalled (see www.cooksillustrated.com for more details), and the latest first-place is the Air Cork The Wine Preserver: “Once you get the hang of lowering the food-safe latex balloon into the bottle and inflating it just above the leftover wine’s surface, this budget-friendly device effectively seals off air, preserving wine’s drinkability for at least one month (we are continuing to test). A downside: You can seal only one bottle at a time. Balloons are guaranteed for 80 uses; replacement balloons cost about $4.”

Penn GwynnA reliable necessity for wine loversI’ve gone through or tried several vacuum units in the past decade. One, a one-piece unit, worked well but eventually gave up the ghost after many years when the rubber gasket that provides the seal with the bottle shredded – just from a lot of wear; unfortunately this unit was no longer to be found when I finally needed to replace it. Another one piece unit purchased recently through Amazon performed poorly, not making or holding a good seal. I also tried a two piece unit similar to the Vacu Vin, except it also never established a meaningful seal and was a total waste of money. The Vacu Vin, in contrast, is great great great. I’ve been using it for months now and I am very happy with it; it’s consistent in providing a vacuum that lasts at least 2-3 days giving a satisfying resistance and a little pop when I pull the plug. The audible cue for when a vacuum has been achieved is a nice feature, although I must say I found that if I keep going a bit beyond the point where the cue kicks in I seem to establish a better, longer lasting seal, compared to if I stop pumping as soon as the cue kicks in.If a two piece unit works well, as this one does, it is preferable to a one piece for several reasons: First, the sealed bottle is accommodated into cabinets or fridges better, being shorter. Second, you can buy additional vacuum plugs to use with the single vacuum pump, making it easy to replace worn plugs and have more than two bottles “in circulation” at any one time. Third, you don’t jeopardize the performance of the pump when you wash the plugs. While I’ve seen a couple reviews complaining that the pump on this unit can eventually fail after a couple of years’ use, to me that is quite acceptable for something that is used every day and extends the lifetime of precious and potentially expensive wine. I would have no problem buying one of these every year if necessary, considering the money I saved by being able to make a bottle retain its quality over several days after openning. Think about it – it’s like paying $12 for a year’s insurance on hundreds of dollars worth of wine.Update: the seal is unbelievably good. Recently I stored a 25% full bottle for two weeks under the vacuum seal with the Vacu Vin. When I realized how long it had been in the cabinet I decided to toss the contents and when I removed the Vacu Vin plug the bottle was still under vacuum. Amazing. Don’t know how good the wine was at this point – I didn’t care to test it. But that’s not the point. Vacuum is really excellent – at least if you pump somewhat past the audible signal that vacuum has been achieved.

YipeeAlso doubles for vacuum sealer bags! This has been working great so far. I’m not really a wine drinker, but I do enjoy cooking with it. This has allowed me to use what I need and seal it until I use it again. Also, I tried this out on some vacuum sealer bags I had and it worked to remove the air from those too! I love a multitasking gadget in the kitchen!

GMLAworks as expected and has lasted for yearsWine must be protected from excessive oxidation or it turns to vinegar, thus “wine vinegar”. This stopper and pump set preserves the quality and taste of wine beyond a few hours fairly well, for at least as much as a day. My opinion is that of a grocery store wine shopper. The stopper and pump extract air from an opened bottle with ease and thereby extends the life of the wine in the bottle. The pump clicks when “enough” air had been removed but I can continue to pump and pump and get more air out. The remaining wine is preserved nicely for at least a day: I don’t think I’ve let any rest for longer than that.

AriKeeps wine freshThis has kept wine good for over a week. If you are someone that goes through a bottle slowly then this is a money saver. It really keeps a bottle fresh and after a week it still tastes as if the bottle was just opened.
