  • Review
    Everything was good.
  • You’ll sing along!
You’ll get hooked on history! Lyrics tell the true story!
  • Exactly like the show.
Highly recommend you listen and read the words before going to live
  • Incredible for ALL ages!
This hamilton soundtrack was the first soundtrack I bought off of Amazon, so I was skeptical. I was curious to see what I would get after seeing reviews that the CD was not Hamilton. Surely enough this was not the case with mine. My family and I have played the soundtrack in the car daily and can’t seem to get enough of it. It is perfect for all ages. My husband ( a history teacher loves it) and my kids can’t get enough of the raps ( especially lafayette) . The CD arrived sooner than expected in one day. It came with two CD’s ( Act 1 and Act 2) , and two small books that had all of the lyrics. As far as soundtrack prices go this was fairly inexpensive. The two only downside to this soundtrack is that you can not download the music onto a phone or a laptop and you can’t get enough of it! My family has to take a long road trip coming up and we can’t wait to take it with us.
  • Hamilton CD’s
    Fabulous!
  • Fabulous. A must for every fan of the musical theatre.
The double CD album is excellent. I also bought the DVD with the original Broadway cast as well. I recommend each. This production is sheer genius — an overused word, but true in this case.
  • Got everything I wanted!
I am a mega fan of Hamilton. Got this 2-disc set as a gift to myself. It comes with lyrics for the whole show to help me learn the harder/faster bits I’ve been dying to know. This is my jam. I play it anytime I’m in the car, and at night to fall asleep, and in the shower, and when doing house chores! It’s on constant repeat in my house, car, and mind!
  • Good Buy
Purchased this as a gift for my daughter, she can’t stop singing the songs from it. She loves it.

This is a fantastic Broadway show and love the songs.
  • Wonderful and fun arrangement
Beautiful and fun. Can’t sit still!!
  • Flawless delivery
Delivered on time. Really enjoy the quality –
  • Fantastic, but if you sensor music for your babies, be aware.
The music is amazing! It takes more than 2 hours to go through the album and we never seem to get to the end when driving around town with the kids, we seem to listen to the first 10 songs. Since we’ll never get to see the play (omg the tickets are $$$$$) we talk a lot about what might be happening in the songs. The Explicit version has a couple of curse words and harsh F bombs, but the unexplicit version is still racy for a mom of young kids, with the illusion to one “Fuuu” , the songs that talk about sex is prominent throughout. The kids have friends that are religious and more filtered than our household, so I have to tell them, their family may not appreciate the music like our family. We listen to this also, because I don’t remember any impact on sex and music in my life when I was 9, I survived and enjoyed the karaoke about topics I had no clue about. So, with this in mind, I decided we’ll just enjoy this amazing music. No X-ray lyrics for them. As my kids start to analyze the lyrics, explaining what a whore is, explaining “no more sex” or explaining “lock up your daughters and horses, of course it’s hard to have intercourse over four sets of corsets” have not come up yet. I do admit the very first line was very painful, because it’s sooooo catchy, and the easiest to remember, and I explained I don’t want the kids singing in the elementary school the very first line ” How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore” (then kids slur the next few lines) and whore gets emphasized. My child doesn’t know the word, so the malapropism turns into “son of a door, or son of a poor” – it works for now. I haven’t had to explain the line “ladies – there are so many to deflower” yet either. :|But the songs move from sex to battle, then the affair (Say No To This), and that song is pretty steamy, and the kids & I love the tune, it’s a beautiful song, and they can tell! (She turned red, she led me to her bed, let her legs spread and said, stay?” and “You see, that was my wife you decided to Fuuuu” “You can keep seeing my whore wife if the price is right”Our kids are coming from the world of Kids Bop, Disney Music, and more innocent Broadway tunes. it’s our first forray into an adult topic. Oh, by the time tickets become available, and affordable, they will be young adults, so, what ever is shown in the play, they’ll be ready for it!
  • Welcome back, Alexander Hamilton…
So I’ve had my time in the world of both volunteer and paid musical theatre, had a couple of people I knew when go on to be nominated for Tonys and such while discovering ’twasn’t the life path for me.But back then I used to follow shows and cast albums like people used to hang on the Beatles’ every move. Of late, I kinda got away from it and there just wasn’t much that was exciting strictly as a cast album. Meaning I find that there haven’t been many albums that you can listen to never seeing what’s going on onstage and still be compelling.Um, this ain’t one of those.I thought aw, a hip-hop musical. Well, I guess someone was gonna take a stab at it sooner or later. And hip-hop Founding Fathers. Sigh. I wouldn’t have thought of the words ‘hip hop’ and ‘twee’ in the same sentence before. But I was wrong! I literally sat up and turned around to stare at the stereo about four lines into the first song. Got up to turn it up and stood there moving my head slightly to the beat and getting fired up about a guy no one nowadays cares about or could tell you anything about. At the last ‘Alexander Hamilton!!’ of the first song I was applauding like one would in an audience and I put down what I was doing and listened to the whole thing rapturously.Man it’s been years since I was so jazzed about a show. The brilliance of the lyric writing and the arrangement is blinding. There’s not a weak link up there in the cast. They’re all on point bringing serious game.Anyone can listen to this. Don’t like musicals? You’ll still like this. Don’t like hip-hop? You’ll still like this. Don’t like history? You’ll still like this. And you’ll say wow, if all history could be presented like that, maybe more people would be into it. You’ll be right.I was already an admirer of the American experiment and the people (yes, women and children too) who were so brave as to undertake such a thing with no promise of their lives, let alone success. But man, I cried about eleven times, and not just at the ‘sad’ parts (and some of it is pretty sad) Sometimes I was simply weeping in appreciation for what they did for us.Sometimes it was in appreciation of the rarity of art that is truly inspired and singular. This is.If this show don’t walk away with every 2016 Tony Award it’s nominated for, the judges are amoebas, or possibly garden rocks.I wouldn’t be shocked to see the composer (who is the guy playing Hamilton) get put up for the Pulitzer Prize.GET THIS ALBUM. This is the best record I have heard in ANY genre in at least the last seven or eight years.Play it for your kids, who deserve to have the fire of loving history and learning lit underneath them. Play it for you because it’s never too late to do that for yourself either.Welcome back, Alexander Hamilton.

If you’re a Hamilton fan, this LP box set is an absolute must-have! The sound quality is fantastic, and having the full Broadway cast recording on vinyl just makes the experience feel even more special. The packaging is beautiful—it comes in a sturdy hardcover box with printed sleeves for each of the four LPs, plus a booklet with all the lyrics, which is a great touch. One thing to note: the lyrics are explicit, just like in the original show, so if you’re playing it around family or younger listeners, keep that in mind. Also, if you’re used to streaming, flipping through four records might take some getting used to, but honestly, that just adds to the nostalgia and experience.Overall, this set is perfect for collectors or anyone who wants to immerse themselves in Hamilton beyond just hitting play on a playlist. Totally worth it!

What Customers Say:

  • Solid songs, fine singing
The melodies and lyrics suit the show very well and advance the classic story. I was pleasantly surprised.
  • I LOVE THE OUTSIDERS
S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders has captured the hearts of readers for decades, and the musical adaptation brings that same emotional power to the stage with a vibrant, rock-infused score. The Outsiders musical cast album delivers a dynamic blend of 1960s-inspired rock, Broadway flair, and heartfelt storytelling that will resonate with fans of the novel and newcomers alike. The music, composed by Jamestown Revival and Justin Levine, perfectly complements the novel’s themes of class division, friendship, and loyalty. The opening track, “Outsiders,” sets the tone with gritty energy, while “Stay Gold” offers a tender, reflective moment that channels the novel’s deeper message about preserving innocence. Songs like “Rumble” and “Nothing Can Hurt Us” capture the raw intensity and unbreakable bond of the Greasers, making the album a rollercoaster of emotions, from raucous anthems to poignant ballads. The lyrics are rich with the characters’ inner turmoil and hope, reflecting their struggles with identity, belonging, and survival. Standout tracks like “Stay Gold” and “Nothing Can Hurt Us” give more emotional depth to the beloved characters of Ponyboy and Johnny, while the ensemble cast delivers energetic and heartfelt performances that bring the Greasers and Socs to life. Although the Broadway production didn’t have a long run, the cast album more than does justice to the story’s spirit, capturing its raw emotion and timeless themes. Whether you’re a long-time fan of The Outsiders or discovering the story through the music, this album is an unforgettable listen. Overall, the Outsiders musical CD is a passionate, powerful tribute to a classic novel, offering a fresh, emotional take that will leave listeners with a deeper appreciation for the story’s themes of youth, loyalty, and the struggle to find one’s place in the world.STAY GOLD YALL<3
  • I LOVE THE OUTSIDERS SO MUCH!!!!
This vinyl is amazing. Compared to other vinyls it’s pretty cheep. It also sounds amazing, and I am in love with it.
  • I LOVE IT
This is so much cheaper than getting it at the actual broadway show (75$+tax) and it comes so quickly. I wish the color of the vinyls was different like blue or yellow but the quality of the songs is so nice and the packaging is amazing. Such an incredible musical and I highly suggest this product!
  • A great take on a modern classic
Bought this for my mom after I got to see the musical live. She is planning to see it when it comes to town for her now too!
  • YAYAYAYAYA
literally the best purchase i’ve ever made
  • Expecting more…
Music was lacklustre at best. There isn’t even an 11 o’clock number!
  • They loved it!
A gift some one really wanted.

What Customers Say:

  • A Pleasurable Musical Escape
La La LandHaving directed and also worked as a lighting designer on numerous stage musicals, and as a big fan of the Hollywood movie musical, I was pleased to see Writer/Director Damien Chazelle’s new offering, La La Land. Had he hoped to revive the Movie Musical in the new millennium, his motion picture is well on it way to that goal. I realize musicals are not for everybody, with the premise of breaking into song and dance at the high and low dramatic moments as too unrealistic for some. Not me though. The no credits opening sequence simply begins with a Cinemascope logo expanding to reveal stopped traffic on a Los Angles freeway. After panning past the stranded motorists a lively musical intro leads into a girl singing Another Day in the Sun. As she exits her vehicle others join in an exuberant song and dance all over cars choreographed by four-time Emmy nominated Mandy Moore (not the actress). What is impressive is the fluid movement during this whole musical sequence when you begin to realize that this seamless action is almost one continuous camera shot with a minimum of cuts – a tremendous undertaking accomplished by cinematographer, Linus Sangren. “Another Day in the Sun” alone is worth the price of admission.Sangren successfully uses this continuous “no-cut” camera work on another musical sequences. Also as a theatrical lighting designer myself, I appreciated the use of theatrical styled lighting, where many moments the lighting is dimmed with only a single light is focused on the actor or cross fades much as it would appear in a stage production.Justin Hurwitz provides a very listenable score and songs that should appeal to traditionalmusical theater fans and to a new generation of ears interwoven with traditional jazz themes. While there may not be the single hummable melody emerging from the score, Hurwitz brings a fresh take on the movie music form.Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) is a struggling traditional jazz keyboardist whose dream is to have his own club. Mia (Emma Stone) is a barista and aspiring actress who just seems to go to an endless stream of auditions. She also dreams of writing her one-woman show. After several awkward chance meetings, they finally come together in the ballad, “A Lovely Night” dancing atop a vista over Los Angeles.Sebastian has an opportunity to play in a novo-jazz fronted by former college friend Keith (John Legend) that becomes a popular hit but is keeping him apart from Mia while on tour. Mia finishes her one woman play and books a small theater to perform her work. Sebastian feels he has sold out his dream and Mia feels her play is a failure and she returns to her parents home.Gosling and Stone, while not possessing Broadway belt voices, both have pleasant singing styles very suited to the Hurwitz score. Their on screen chemistry is believable and their dance sequences together, while not of the same level as from the golden age of movie musicals, are a treat. If you like musicals or just a pleasurable escape, that had me smiling throughout, then the film, La La Land is your movie.
  • Great Music from a Great Movie
If you love the movie, then you probably will love the soundtrack. I haven’t bought a movie soundtrack in a long time, but this one just called to me. I love watching the movie, but sometimes I just want to hear the music!
  • Amazing
    Amazing
  • Wonderful Musical with Wonderful Music
We typically see a movie every week so I had seen the larger than life poster with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling dancing in front of the night lights. The poster caught my interest but not enough for me to actually consider seeing the movie. To say the least, I wasn’t interested in seeing this movie and probably would not have if not for my daughter who dragged me along on a snowy winter evening. What a wonderful surprise it was when I walked away feeling moved and inspired. The move touched me like no other movie has in a very long time.As I pondered the effect of the move a realization was discovered that what made the movie so wonderful was the music and the way it was performed. The music is a genius work of musical art. With its simple yet allusive design it draws you in and moves your spirit then stays with you while you ponder the scene, then you are touched again by the next song. It all flows so well.Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are fantastic performers, the movie and music would not be what it is without them. No other professional musicians or actors could have done it as well and as applicable for the setting. Each time I re-listen to a song from the soundtrack I re-experience the movie. It is wonderful.
  • Superb fidelity
La La Land is my favorite movie, so perhaps I am biased in absolutely loving this sound track. The cuts are in correct order per the film sequences. Even if you have an inexpensive sound system, this CD will make it sound like million bucks. This is the best sounding CD in my 200 plus library.

  • UK version
In addition to being the movie soundtrack, this was the Beatles 3rd album; it was also their first with 100% original compositions. Each of their albums, in chronological order, shows sophistication and growth, as artists and composers, from previous albums. The US version of this album just includes the 7 songs from the film (with some instrumental fillers); this version adds about 1/2 dozen tracks that would eventually land on other US albums. The tunes speak for themselves; well crafted classic pop, with excellent arrangements and production. Many decades later, this is one of my all time favorites.
  • Great purchase
Arrived intact and sounds great on my record player.

  • A Long Journey Toward the Right Sound
Ever since the first CD edition appeared back in 1986, I’ve been searching for a truly satisfying version of this album. That release sounded muffled — almost suffocated. In the early ’90s, we got a “sharper” remaster, but one that drained the soul out of the recording — the sound was thin, nearly sterile. Then came the 2007 version, which promised a modern sound but quickly turned into an assault on the ears: excessive compression, every breath squashed flat, and listening fatigue after just two tracks. I found myself buying the same beloved album again and again — and always ending up a little disappointed. When Skepticism Meets SurpriseSo when the 2025 box set was announced, I wasn’t exactly rushing to get excited. It wasn’t cheap, the live show had already appeared in the Archives box, and I don’t own a Blu-ray player to enjoy the surround mix anyway. All the memorabilia and booklets — nice as they may be — weren’t what I cared about.I wanted just one thing: a stereo version that finally sounds right. And to my delight — it finally happened. How The Lamb Should SoundThe new remaster manages to find that long-lost balance between clarity and dynamics. The sound is clean and open, slightly bright but never harsh. Compression is moderate, so you can turn up the volume without fatigue. The stereo field feels wide and spacious, instruments are well-separated yet cohesive, and everything breathes naturally. There’s a welcome sense of air that restores the cinematic dimension so essential to Genesis’s original production.Peter Gabriel’s vocals feel closer and more human than ever; Tony Banks’s electric piano sparkles; Mike Rutherford’s bass finally has depth; and Phil Collins’s drums are crisp without being aggressive. It’s simply a version that finally does justice to this masterpiece — without trying to over-polish it.A Word on PackagingAs usual, Amazon managed to dampen the joy just a bit: the box arrived in a soft mailer rather than a proper carton, leaving the corners scuffed. A shame for such a carefully produced set to suffer from careless shipping. Still — once the disc starts spinning, all of that fades away.ConclusionIt’s never easy to tamper with a mythical album like The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. After years of disappointing remaster attempts, the 2025 edition finally restores the respect this record deserves. It’s not just a technical refresh — it’s a musical resurrection of one of progressive rock’s greatest achievements.
  • The Lamb box: To buy or not to buy? My opinion.
Unlike a lot of Genesis fans that are quibbling online about this box set, I’m fairly happy with it. Yes, there’s been a lot of tinkering with the Shrine show since it was released the first time around. It’s my understanding that other than a good remaster of it, it’s pretty much the same release as the Archive 1 box, except for the encores at the end. Yes, I also got the Broadcast collection box to hear what all the fuss is about. Each artist wants their live material to be presented in its best light, therefore, fixes will be made. I’m OK with this to an extent. I think they should leave unreleased studio material alone except for remastering. Not a fan of what some other bands have done with their outtakes and b-sides, but to each his own, I reckon. To the novice collector looking to purchase this box, it’s a great document of a sensational band at a very turbulent point in their career. I think it serves its purpose well.
  • The album has never sounded better. I especially enjoyed the Dolby Atmos mix
The packaging and the extras included in the set are outstanding. The remaster was fantastic and having the live version included was a nice bonus. Highly recommended for the Genesis / Peter Gabriel fans
  • Genesis classic album
Excellent edition of the classic album.Sound quality Is very good and the live show is a nice adition.Bluray should be better. As for the best sound i still prefer(marginally)the 2007 remix
  • A fresh take on an old friend
Definitely worth it for the Atmos mix. I have heard bits, backing vocals and harmonies I haven’t heard before in the 45+ years I’ve been enjoying this album. Songs that weren’t my favorite, like “Grand Parade” have a new and exciting life to them. The mix makes the surrealistic tone of the story even more evident, the slippermen surround you and Hackett’s guitar work opens up. There’s surprising choices made, what gets moved back and what comes forward now, and honestly, I love it. It’s the album we know, but it’s also fresh. Felt like a teenager hearing it for the first time. Can’t ask for much more than that in my opinion.
  • Great Dolby Atmos mix
Amazon is the worst packer on the planet. Two corners slightly smashed in, not enough to warrant a return. The music on the other hand, is fantastic. The new mix in Dolby Atmos brings out some background details lost in the background on the OG vinyl I bought in ‘74. Gabriel’s vocals are also much clearer and slightly more forward in n the mix. I only wish there was more presence of Steve Hackett’s guitar.
  • Great reissue of a Classic
Incredible boxed set of perhaps the greatest prog-rock album of all time. The 5.1 mix is incredible.
  • I adore this band
Everything I’d hoped for in this set

  • Wicked Soars (eventually)
I am a big fan of Gregory McQuires novels, ‘Wicked’ and ‘Confessions Of An Ugly Step-Sister’ being by far the best. The way he looks at the questions of good and evil is a recurring theme. No one truely thinks they are evil, just misunderstood. And ‘Good’ people (bible-waving happy clappers, et al) are equally questionable. In reality everyone thinks their actions are justfied and for the best. The news that ‘Wicked’ would be made into a musical floored me a little. I was eagerly awaiting the mega-bucks Hollwood adaptation that has been in the works for years with Demi Moore’s production company. But a musical makes sense – Oz has always been a muscal world, and the medium it lends itself to colourful fantasy. Plus the characters can speak directly to the audience and tell us what they are thinking; hard to achieve in film.Being in Australia I knew it would be years before we got to see ‘Wicked’ on stage, so ordered the cast recording from amazon. At first I wasn’t a fan of the music. I thought it was a little too Disney, and once I discovered the composers credentials lay in ‘Beauty And The Beast’ and ‘Poccahontas’, I shuddered. Elphaba sounds more like Arial from ‘The Little Mermaid’ than the dark and deep creature created by McGuire. But credit to Stephen Schwartz, what seemed poppy and pretty on the surface soon turned out to have a very dark heart, which beautiflly reflects the themes. The songs get better and better on further listening, and the vocal performances are sensational, especially by Kristin Chenoweth (possibly the best name ever), who has a devilish sense of comic timing and manages the different faces of Glinda (sweet Valley Girl ‘Clueless’ to the operatic high As.) She is hilarious and a stand-out talent. She made this recording for me and I would hate to be another performer stepping into her role.Beautifully scored and performed, packed full of humour, and wth a story line that has been even further developed by the remarkable Winnie Holtzman, ‘Wicked’ is a fully realized and magical experience. Now if it would just head Down Under…
  • Love it!
I love this show. Amazing album and came in great shape
  • Great musical – listen to this before going to the show
Purchased this before going to see the show in Minneapolis
  • Wicked
Purchased this because at that time the movie hadn’t come out and I couldn’t find a video recording of the Broadway play. Wife loved the cd.
  • Wicked well worth the time
The “Wicked” Original Broadway Cast recording sparkles with energy and emotion, and features the original performers for whom the music was specifically written. The musical version of “Wicked” differs substantially from the original novel by Gregory Maguire but the altered storyline, in which the minor character of Glinda the Good in the novel is elevated to co-star status in the musical, becomes a story of the friendship between two young women and the sacrifices they must make to be true to their ideals. While this makes the musical story completely different than the book it is arguably more compelling than the actual novel, as evidenced by the show’s runaway success on Broadway, Chicago and on national tour. Add composer Stephen Schwartz’s best work since “Pippen” 30 years ago and the result is a show that IMO is easily as enjoyable as “Les Miserables” and far more gripping than “Phantom of the Opera” or “Miss Saigon.”Schwartz introduces the dramatic “Wicked Witch” theme (a six chord progression whose unspoken lyrics purportedly are “oh no, the witch is here”) in the first moments of the overture and recalls it chillingly again moments later when it becomes apparent at the Wicked Witch’s birth that something is horribly wrong. Then, when the young Witch is finally united with her true love in the second act, the love theme utilizes the exact same chord progression, but now set in a compelling ostinato figure that underscores the urgency and desperation of their fleeting moment together. The Hindemith-like antiphony of “No One Mourns the Wicked” both jars us and serves to clue us into realizing that something’s not quite right during the “Ding-Dong the Witch is Dead”-like opening celebration number. The hopeful yet tragic “Unlimited” theme arcs through the story and is a clever homage to the “Wizard of Oz” movie score, using the same first seven notes as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and then diverging. Schwartz noted in interviews that he chose to use only the first seven notes as an inside joke because copyright laws specifically define eight notes as the point where infringement on someone else’s tune occurs. The music of “Wicked” is for the most part completely dependent on the context of the musical and the individual numbers do not stand alone well, but Ms. Chenowith’s “Popular” and Ms. Menzel’s legitimate showstopper “Defying Gravity” are justifiably acclaimed, and the de facto finale “For Good” is already available on Amazon on two other non-Broadway recordings, one of which features the composer singing half of the duet himself. The aforementioned love song “As Long as You’re Mine” also has to be heard in the context of the story to be fully appreciated; the audience at this point in the musical has been taken on a journey from the apparent celebration of the witch’s demise at the beginning to the show 180 degrees to where we now understand her character and motivations to where from “Defying Gravity” onwards we are actually cheering for the witch to succeed; by the time this duet comes along near the end of the second act, the witch and her true love are being hunted across the land and we already know that our heroine is doomed to melt (and soon!) at the hands of a certain Kansas farmgirl, lending the lyrics and chord progressions, maudlin at best out of context, tremendous pathos and power akin to “The Fall of Saigon” and “The Last Night of the World” in “Miss Saigon.” Only when you see the musical do you understand why Schwartz chose Fiyero’s otherwise jarring verse “Maybe I’m brainless, maybe I’m wise.””Wicked” is well worth your time but you’ll enjoy it infinitely more once you also see the show, and the show itself is well worth a weekend trip to the nearest city staging a production to see it.

  • NEIL DIAMOND
Enjoy the songs chosen. His gentle voice and those songs bring back sweet memories.
  • This extended, 2 DISC version of ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS by Neil Diamond is THE ONE to buy!
Although it could be argued that Capitol Record Companies reissues and repackages of Diamond’s catalogue could have been better handled — remaster old titles BEFORE reissuing; and when you put out a greatest hits package, do it RIGHT the first time — it’s hard to argue with the fact that even MORE Diamond hits (it’s a TWO DISC SET) makes for an even BETTER all-time greatest hits collection. And since the charge for eighteen — count’em EIGHTEEN MORE TUNES! — is only $7, it’s a good deal! All 23 of the hits on the original pack are still here: “Cracklin’ Rosie”, “Cherry, Cherry”, “Forever in Blue Jeans”, “I’m a Believer”, Beautiful Noise”, “America”, “Soolaimon”, “Sept. Morn”, etc. What’s been added are both essential hits that should have been part of the original package, unusual but well-loved hits and favorites, as well as more recent songs/hits that are already becoming classics. The eighteen extras, for those who want a quick list:”Brooklyn Roads”, “Glory Road”, “And the Grass Won’t Pay No Mind”, “Cruncy Granola Suite”, “Stones”, “Done Too Soon”, “You Got to Me”, “Longfellow Serenade”, “I’ve Been This Way Before”, “Desiree”, “We”, “Yesterday’s Songs”, “Heartlight”, “Pretty Amazing Grace”, “The Boat That I Row”, “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime”, “Hell Yeah”, “If You Know What I Mean” and, for good measure, “Something Blue” (a song off his new, VERY listenable, album “Melody Road”).The older songs from the “Bang” label years (“You Got to Me”, “…Boat…”, “Thank the Lord…”) are just as good — and just as classic — as “”I’m a Believer”, et al. In fact, “You Got to Me” and “The Boat that I Row” probably would’ve been bigger hits if they’d been released after the non-mono recording days (although the latter still did well for “Lulu” on the UK charts).Although not a big chart hit, “Brooklyn Roads” is a sublime recording and one of Diamond’s “transitional” songs (as he moved from writing strictly “pop ditties” to songs with more mature lyrics). And both “Glory Road” and “Done too Soon” embrace the upheaval of the ’60s (the former is supposedly about things like “The Freedom March”, MLK and RFK, although it seems like it would fit fine in an album like “Beautiful Noise” or “Melody Road”, both of which take on the subjects of songwriting and performing). Starting off with a rockNroll ryhtym and beat, “Done Too Soon” uses the Bob Dylanesque “tirade” of lyrics before shifting gears into a slow ballad in the end verses, underscoring the fact that life — for the peaceful and the wicked — happens much faster than we’d like.”And the Grass Won’t Pay No Mind” is one of Diamond’s more lovely ballads about romance (it’s been covered by all sorts of singers, including Elvis) and echoes of it can be heard in the beginning of a newer ballad (“Oo Do I Wanna Be Yours”, on “Melody Road”) before it takes an even more interesting turn into a sort of Polynesian rhythm in its choruses.”Crunchy Granola Suite”, Diamond’s song about weed and its mellowing effects sounds great in the studio version or the live (“Hot August Night”) version, and “Stones” is another dynamite love ballad (even if the words are a bit mysterious).”Longfellow Serenade” is one of those Diamond classics that should ALWAYS be included on a greatest/best of package. It’s that good. “I’ve Been this Way Before” is less angst-ridden than “I Am I Said”, but still as emotional and personal in the offing (I woulda picked “The Last Picasso”, but I appreciate the more musically/lyrically quirky songs).”Desiree” may well be Diamond’s last pop/rock, top 40 hit, and it’s a solid, very good tune (and like so many other Diamond tunes, it was a number one hit on the ADULT CONTEMPORARY Billboard charts), so it’s a good pick.”We” is a big-hearted, toe-tapping and insightful, mid-tempo tune, and “Hell Yeah” is a strong, guitar driven ballad and a sort of pop/rock “My Way” but more personal. Both are from the “12 Songs” album (again, I woulda picked “Delirious Love”, the Bryan Wilson backed version that hit 27 on “Billboard’s” ,AC singles chart — it’s a REALLY catchy tune — over one or the other, but that’s picking nits).”Yesterday’s Songs” is a fun, feel-good, tune and “Heartlight” is a big, kinda cheesy, ballad. BOTH hit it big on the regular and AC charts on “Billboard”, and while they might not be as classic as the usual suspects or as interesting and divergent as things like “Soolaimon” or “Done Too Soon” or lot of Diamond’s newer tunes (“I’m Onto You”, “Don’t Go There”, “Another Day That Time Forgot”, “Oo Do I Wanna Be Yours”, “Seongah and Jimmy”), they ARE some of his biggest hits. And highly listenable.Speaking of divergent, “Pretty Amazing Grace” was another AC “Billboard” hit (30) for Diamond, and deservedly so: part rock, part folk, part samba, part jazz, it’s a musical mash-up about being saved by love. Also, on the first disc, Capitol has included “Something Blue”, probably the most commercial of all the new cuts on “Melody Road”. Although no single was — and thus far has been — issued, inclusion on this greatest hits isn’t entirely without merit. A youtube video made of the song (replete with Colorado mountain scenery and puppies) and released BEFORE the album, has already was racked up over half-a-million views. Finally, “If You Know What I Mean” (another love ballad with a few mysterious lyrics) is a great ballad from his CLASSIC “Beautiful Noise” album (and a number one AC hit) that closes out this extended collection.Verdict? While they will definitely be stone-cold — or steadfast, like moi — fans who might feel the urge to pick a nit or two over song selection, this extended, 2 disc version of ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS by Neil Diamond is THE ONE to buy from here on out.
